Individual Food Plan and Exercise

I did a personal food plan and exercise program that combined all of the individual actions that worked from each of the best weight loss plans I had used over the decades. I shopped at a health food store, so I ate no white flour or white sugar (both of which are chemically processed and create food cravings!). I ate protein, vegetables, and a minimum of whole grain breads at each meal. And I power walked 4.15 miles every day.

I have always been overweight, I have spent a lifetime searching for the best weight loss plan for me. I have done–starting in my pre-adolescent years–yogurt and granola, skim milk and banana, cabbage soup, Weight Watchers (three times), Jenny Craig, Dr. Atkins, The Zone, the Hilton Head, the Suzanne Somers, and numerous other plans. If you are planning on going on an LDS mission in the near future, or if you have a child planning to go, it is important to be prepared. You will be gone for two years, leaving the comforts of home behind you and living out of two suitcases. One thing to consider is your health. A mission is exhausting and you have a very busy schedule to follow, so you need to be healthy.

On a mission you do a lot of walking and many missionaries also do a lot of bike riding. If you are not physically fit, this can be really hard on your body and you could suffer a great deal. Before you go on your mission you should have a fitness plan and exercise each day to prepare for what is ahead. Even going walking every day for 30 to 60 minutes is great, especially if you wear the shoes you’ll be wearing on the mission. By doing this you can break in your shoes and it will prevent you from getting horrible blisters out in the mission field.

While on your mission you can also exercise. Missionaries are supposed to wake up at 6:30am each day and do their personal and companionship studies. You are allowed to wake up 30 minutes early at 6:00am and do some exercising. Take advantage of these 30 minutes. Although you might be walking or bike riding a lot on your mission, you still need to get some good cardio exercise and strength training. All you need is a good exercise plan to follow and you can keep yourself strong and fit throughout your entire mission.

Many missionaries come home from their missions having gained 20 pounds or more. Some will write home asking for larger clothes because the ones they have are starting to get too small. Take the time to exercise each day and avoid losing weight and feeling gross. If you have a plan and you stick to it, you will be blessed with increased energy and stamina and you might even come home a bit thinner than when you left.

Pork and chicken dumplingsIngredients

150g pork mince
150g chicken mince
1 Tbsp light soy sauce
1 Tbsp oyster sauce
½ tsp sesame oil
1 Tbsp finely chopped ginger
½ cup water chestnuts, chopped
6 shiitake mushrooms (300g), finely sliced
2 spring onions, finely sliced
25 fresh white round wonton wrappers
2 Tbsp vegetable oil

Sauce

¹⁄³ cup light soy sauce
1 chilli, finely sliced
2cm-piece ginger,
cut into fine strips
1 tsp sugar
½ tsp sesame oil

Method

1 Combine pork and chicken mince, soy, oyster sauce, sesame oil, ginger, chestnut, mushroom and onion in a bowl. Mix until well combined.
2 Lay 5 wrappers on a clean bench. Using your fingertip, wet the outside edges with a little water. Put about 3 teaspoons of mince filling in the centre of each wrapper. Fold over to encase filling. Overlap edges in little pleats. Gently flatten base slightly so dumplings stand up. Repeat 4 times with remaining wrappers and filling.
3 Heat a non-stick frypan. Add a little oil. Fry dumplings in batches for about 1 minute or until base is crisp. Add 1 cup hot water, cover and cook for 5-6 minutes or until water has evaporated and dumplings are tender. Remove and keep warm.
4 To make sauce: Combine ingredients. Serve in dipping bowl or over the dumplings.

The coffee trees take at least two years for the young plant to start producing coffee beans. When the harvest time comes, the work increases radically. We’re a nation of convenience, and much of the resistance to healthier eating is that it does generally take a little more effort and time to buy and slice fruits and vegetables. Food retailers have been catching on, slowly, and it’s much easier now to get bags of sliced carrots, celery, apples, nuts and raisins.

Of course these aren’t necessarily organic foods, and organic is the better way to go, but we think anything raw is infinitely better than cooked, processed food. If you have the time, do buy organic and slice them yourself. But if you’re in a hurry, and nowhere near a natural food store, then don’t beat yourself up or sabotage your efforts because you can’t do this 100% all the time. That’s not realistic. Anything from the fruit and vegetable aisle is going to be better for you than a potato chip, or worse yet, a french fry!

Leaving Sunday afternoon and returning Friday evening has become routine over the last couple of years. You ran your errands and spent time with the family. You managed a brief workout early Saturday morning so you could attend the kid’s soccer games and birthday parties. Business travel is difficult. Lately you are feeling your clothes tightening around your waste. It has not gotten to the point of buying new clothes, yet. Ask yourself if this sounds familiar. There are more and more business professionals challenged with stressful jobs compounded by stressful travel. Surely, this takes a toll on the family and personal life[1], but even more important it could be destroying your health. When your health is gone, your family and job is in jeopardy.

Health and fitness for traveling business professionals is a serious concern, “But it is also a source of a variety of stresses, often overlooked or denied by both organizations and travelers themselves. Continuing education is designed to make you more proficient at your job. The more you know and experience the more valuable you become to your employer. Your self-worth and self-esteem increases. If fitness is not a priority in your life, you have too many irons in the fire, you are stretched thin, and now your travel time takes up twenty percent of your waking hours, then you will put fitness on the back burner. At this point, your doctor informs you that your blood pressure is elevating and recommends blood pressure medicine.
